The number of people working from home has increased by a fifth in the last ten years to reach a record 4.2 million. It’s not hard to guess why more workers can work from home so effectively now: technology. Continuous development in remote access to tools business owners would use in the office means that they can take the office with them wherever they are, preferably home.
So why is working from home the new preferred office?
For business owners, there is the initial benefit of reduced costs that are associated with renting, furnishing and powering an office. It also eliminates stressful, tedious and sometimes costly commutes, working from home is widely accepted to increase productivity by working in a less stressful environment with fewer distractions. Those that work from home can, therefore, benefit from a better work-life balance making it a popular chose for those that can.

Some industries, of course, lend themselves more easily to working from home. Industries in which working from home is more prevalent include technology or software development. If your business isn’t in one of these industries, you might think that you’re out of luck.
However, a recent survey by Flexi Jobs suggests this isn’t the case. They report that remote jobs exist in almost every career field, with 5 industries growing by more than 20% since January 2016.

1. Set aside a specific place exclusively for work – it doesn’t have to be big or flashy, just a place to ‘go to work’.
2. Create a daily work schedule – It’s easy to get sucked into being available to work any time, any day. Set a schedule so this doesn’t happen.
3. Get the proper business paperwork- set up a virtual office, it looks far more professional that a home address.
4. Stay contactable – Whether it’s via skype, your mobile or landline, make sure you contact the outside world and be contacted.
5. Ignore the chores – you have extra time now that you don’t have to commute. Use it wisely.
